Hemp is incredibly absorbent without being too thick. We love it for cloth diapering.
Hemp shrinks when it is washed the first couple times, and because of its natural oils, can take several washings for it to reach full absorbency. We wash and dry hemp three times prior to using it in diaper products to minimize shrinkage and give you a head start on absorbency. With each diaper wash, you will see increased absorbency and improved softness. You don't need to prewash your hemp products from OBB more than one time, just keep in mind that it will be a few wearings before you see the hemp perform to its full potential.
We use two kinds of hemp fabrics in our diapers: hemp French terry and hemp jersey.
Hemp French terry is kind of like the material that some cotton sweatshirts are made from: one side is loopy, while the other side is flat, and the fabric has a gentle stretch. We usually face the flat side out and use it as the "right" side.
Hemp Jersey is a thin knit similar to the cotton jersey fabric commonly used in t-shirts, just a bit thicker. Because it is so thin and absorbent, it is a nice fabric for the inner body of an AIO.
